Detecting Radon

As radon gas is colourless, tasteless and odourless special testing equipment is used to detect its presence; and here at RSI we can provide these test kits.
The procedure is relatively straightforward and once the order is placed you will receive the test kit within a few days with clear instructions and information about the detectors. Two vacuum-packed detectors are included in the kit, each to be placed at different locations in the premises when unwrapped; about 1m above floor level. The detectors are relatively small, about the size of a computer’s mouse; each with a unique serial number.
Due to the gas’s properties, the detectors require at least 3 months exposure to the properties atmosphere to measure as accurately as possible the level of radon gas.
Once the 3 months has elapsed, the detectors will be returned to RSI in a pre-stamped and addressed envelope that arrives with the test kit, and RSI will then process the kit to obtain results. Test result durations from the laboratory can vary from 2-4 weeks; and once received RSI will be in touch to explain and discuss the findings.

Domestic Radon Detection

It is recommended that all homeowners have their homes tested for Radon, regardless of whether they live in an area known to have high Radon levels. This is because Radon levels can vary significantly from one building to another, even if neighboring homes have tested below the national reference level. The only way to determine the safety of your home’s Radon level is through testing, so it’s essential to take this step to ensure your indoor air quality is safe and healthy.

Radon Services Ireland  provides a standard testing method which involves deploying two sectors in average-sized homes for a long term 90 day test. These are typically place in most frequently used areas, such as the living room and bedroom, this captures an accurate representation of average Radon levels. After three months, you must return the detectors for analysis. The results are then returned to you within several weeks. Our comprehensive service includes detector installation, retrieval, and interpretation of lab results, followed by customised solutions to address any identified radon issues.

The only way to know if your home is effected by Radon is to test.

Commercial Radon Detection

According to Regulation 66 of Statutory Instrument 30 of 2019, employers in high Radon areas are obligated to conduct Radon testing. Furthermore, the reference level for Radon in workplaces has been set at 300 Bq/m³. If the measured Radon concentration exceeds this level, remedial action is necessary to reduce it to below the reference level.

In the workplace, Radon testing follows the same procedures as those used in homes, with some modifications. In open-plan offices, one detector per 200 square meters is recommended, while in factories and warehouses, one detector per 400 square meters is suggested. We offer a comprehensive service for commercial properties, local authorities, housing associations, and government bodies, including supply, installation, extraction, and remediation.
